Sample Lesson Plan
Topic: Drilling for sentence structure
Time: 50 minutes
Target Students: Beginner
Goal: Student will develop skill to use sentence structures correctly.
Procedure:
Step 1: Introduce myself to students in both Chinese and English. (2 minutes)
Step 2: Students introduce themselves. Prefer in Chinese, if they can’t finish in Chinese, they can use English as help. (3 minutes)
Step 3: Students play “dice and words” game. They take turns to roll the dice. If the dice shows 3, the person has to say 3 words they have learned from current chapter. If he/she cannot find enough words from current chapter, he/she can pull words from previous chapters. (5 minutes)
Step 4: Drilling sentence structures with providing words. Sentence structures and sentence samples have been written on board before class start. Words have been written on individual fresh cards except c which were written on three pieces of paper. The chapter they are learning is语伴. (40 minutes)

Step 5: This is the backup activity. If there is time left, students do another activity. This is a conversation practice.
Student A has studied Chinese in the Columbia University for 2 years. Students B has studied Chinese for half year. One day, student A meet a Chinese girl, student C, in the cafeteria of the Columbia University. After conversation, student A know the girl is a freshman from China. He remembers student B wants to find a language partner to improve his listening and speaking skill of Chinese. Student A decide to ask her whether she likes to become student B’s language partner.
Students group in pairs to act as student A and student C by using the sentence structures and words they practice in this class. (15 minutes)
